The 2008 Sperry Award for the Apollo-Soyuz Docking Technology was presented at the 2009 AIAA Aerospace Spotlight Awards Gala the evening of May 13, 2009 in Washington D.C.

The award recognized General Aleksei Leonov, Prof. Konstantin Bushuyev, General Thomas Stafford and Mr. Glynn Lunney for seminal work on spacecraft docking technology and international docking interface methodology. General Stafford and Mr. Lunney were present.

General Leonov and Prof. Bushyuev (deceased) were honored earlier at a ceremony held on April 20 at Roscosmos, the Russian Federal Space Agency, in Moscow and hosted by Dr. Perminov, Head of Roscosmos. General Leonov and Prof. Bushuyev's daughters received the awards, and General Stafford and others were there as observers.

A video of that ceremony was shown at the Gala. Mr. Aleksander N. Darchiyev, Chargé d'affaires for the Russian Federation to the United States, spoke briefly at the Gala on the impact the 1975 Apollo-Soyuz docking had on the Soviet people and on the scientific interactions between the US and Russia that have grown from that collaboration and that have persisted through times of political upheaval. Present at the event and participating in the ceremony were the President of ASME, the Vice President for Aerospace of SAE International, and the President of the AIAA.
